About us

The bust of Julius Kuehn at the entrance of the headquarters of the new Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants in Quedlinburg
The Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants, the Julius Kuehn Institute (JKI) is both a federal authority and a research institute of the federal German government. It is part of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV). Ourmain task is to lay the scientific groundwork for the functions and policy decisions of the ministry and hence to provide policy advice. The research areas must therefore correspond with the tasks and policy focuses of the government. We do research into everything concerning cultivated plants: plants genetics, plant nutrition, soil science, plant pathology and entomology as well as plant health.

The JKI has presently more than 1.000 permanent staff, including 250 scientists working at 15 institutes. The headquarters is Quedlinburg, a town situated east of the Harz-Mountains in northern Germany. Six institutes are located there. Another major site is Brunswick, only one hour northwest of Quedlinburg by car. There is only one institute in Berlin-Dahlem now, the old headquarters before the 2nd World War and another one in Kleinmachnow close to Berlin. Other sites are Dossenheim near Heidelberg, Dresden, Darmstadt, Great Luesewitz on the Baltic Sea coast and Siebeldingen in the Rhineland-Palatinate. Furthermore we have research stations in Bernkastel-Cues on the river Moselle, in Münster and Elsdorf in North Rhine-Westphalia
