Field and greenhouse services
The Julius Kühn Institute is currently cultivating for agricultural and horticultural experiments in different places a total acreage of 350 hectares. In addition, it uses 70 hectares of forest near Braunschweig. Most of the land is the property of the Federal Republic of Germany, other plots are leased.
Depending on the experiments, the size of the experimental fields can differ significantly – from some square metres to several hectares. The same is true for the duration of testing. For instance, for studying the effects of different farming systems on our environment, the experiments may last many years.
Greenhouses provide ideal conditions for growing plants in an environmentally controlled area. The Julius Kühn Institute has already made major investments in its greenhouse facilities to provide for the most sophisticated systems, and will continue to do so.
